“Just like a thermostat can break if it gets overused, this too can happen to a child’s “brain thermostat” when there is too much stress. The thermostat, or ability to self-regulate, simply gets overwhelmed.”
-Dr. Stuart Shanker

One of the main objectives of a trauma-informed school is to help students learn how to regulate within the context of relationships. Relationship and connection relies on regulation of both the educator and the student. “Regulation” relates to the state of our nervous system and whether it is regulated or dysregulated which impacts our ability to connect and be “in relationship” with one another. Recognizing that all behavior is a form of communication, developing regulation zones/centers allows educators to teach students about regulation and empower students to recognize their own internal states of regulation in order to utilize an appropriate strategy to regulate and re-engage in the learning environment. Join us for this interactive session where we will learn about regulation states, discuss essential components of regulation zones/centers, and create your own wish-list of items for your classroom!
